RHA'S ANNUAL STREAM CLEAN-UP DAY
Shake off those winter blues and join the Raritan Headwaters Association’s (RHA) 29th Annual Stream Clean Up on Saturday, April 18, 2020, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Rain or shine. Tewksbury volunteers will meet at the Route 78 East/Exit 24 DOT Access Road in Tewksbury Township to collect trash in the wetlands and streams adjacent to the access road. Volunteers will hike along streams and vernal pools west of Route 523, and collect trash into plastic bags, and return the bags back to the access road for disposal and recycling. Everyone is invited to participate, from individuals and families to businesses, and civic organizations. Bags, gloves, snacks, water and a limited number of t-shirts will be provided. Volunteer service hours documentation available.
The South Branch of the Raritan River in Tewksbury flows into Readington Township, and the Raritan River, and ultimately, into the Atlantic Ocean. This section is classified as Freshwater-2 trout maintenance and designated as “Category 1” waters. N.J. DEP designates“Category 1” as those streams with exceptional ecological, recreational or water supply significance, or exceptional fisheries resources. In 2019, more than a thousand volunteers helped RHA remove nearly 10 tons of trash from sites in 29 towns in Hunterdon, Somerset and Morris Counties. In just three hours, the small army collected an assortment of debris that ranged from tangled fishing line, plastic bags, and bottles, to a Ford pickup tailgate, a television, leaf blower, tires, and 300 pounds of scrap metal. Please help in our efforts to protect Tewksbury’s pristine biodiversity and wildlife along our streams for future generations.
Volunteers can register at www.RaritanHeadwaters.org/StreamCleanUp. Questions? Contact Mario Colitti, Tewksbury’s RHA Stream Clean-Up Coordinator, 732-672-0635, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
